8th-Dec-2009 12:04 am - straight back, straight back!
Fellow Brits, a question: are girls still taught how to curtsey (and boys how to bow) in school?

I ask because I saw [these photos] of Lady Gaga meeting the Queen, and gasped aloud at the second before saying aloud, "that is not how you curtsey!" (Straighten your back, Gaga! Bend from the knees, not from the waist! Dip deeply but without letting your knee touch the floor!)

My (working class, industrial) school taught us how to curtsey (both day and nighttime versions) just in case we met the Queen, which I recognize is potentially quite strange (albeit in a continuum where I was in the Girls Brigade for many years, where I was taught to arrange flowers, set a tray for an "invalid", and write "proper" thank you notes, because they were apparently equipping me to live a life of privilege in 1874).

Perhaps Gaga has escaped such things. Perhaps people who didn't go to my school escaped such things. Perhaps whole generations are now escaping such things. I'm very curious.

From [Jace Hall's twitter]:

Joe Flanigan said hes shooting a modern western w/ Hal Holbrooke, Robert Patrick, Samantha Mathis. He's a Sherrif that mans up an kix ass!

eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee

I'm gonna choose to believe it's a western in the sense of tumbleweed, dust, and Joe not shaving much, rather than say, a colonial narrative, until I know otherwise. Please, please, please, entertainment industry gods, give us that much.
7th-Dec-2009 12:32 pm - Princess and the Frog
Last night I went to see Princess and the Frog at the Disney Studios. And OMG I loved it. I laughed, I cried, I ship Tiana and Naveen like crazy. They are now the hottest Disney couple. And Dr. Facilier is hot, I think it has something to do with his Keith David voice, mmmmm. I love that man's evil laugh. And I LOVE Charlotte, I'm so glad they actually gave her some character as opposed to just being a spoiled rich kid (and the animation on her was LOL).

I kinda wish though the event had taken place at the El Capitan (which is now being taken over by Disney's Christmas Carol). The Studios was a nice place but it didn't have that grand overall look and feeling of the El Cap, like at the Enchanted event (best damn event ever). The best part was Brian bought me The Art of the Princess and the Frog book, EEEEEE! I must learn how to draw these characters, especially Charlotte.

Oh and I woke up this morning and it was pouring rain, YAY! First time in ages! I must go find a Princess and the Frog icon now. Either Tiana or Facilier. <3

7th-Dec-2009 10:02 am - snowflakes!
homg, so many snowflakes, I have seriously lost count. Thank you, everyone!! They match the snow that fell here overnight, and made me more reconciled to it :D ha. I'm also loving reading the flist this morning and seeing everyone so cheered by the gifts! I have been sending out batches anonymously, because then the cookies could be from me - OR ARE THEY? Mystery abounds, the potential for everyone to be the culprit grows, mwahahaha eeeeeeeeee . . .

My cup of nog is making me want nog. NOG \o/
6th-Dec-2009 10:16 pm - Reminder!
Just so you keep it in mind, the deadline for the 22nd issue is December 18, which is less than two weeks. How are things going? ^_^

(In order to help you answer that question, our own [info]hinotori_writes has scripted a handy Shousetsu Bang*Bang Word Counter! As well as basic word count, it generates tallies for certain... common... keywords. Post your current count here and compare where we're at. XD)
7th-Dec-2009 12:31 am - FIC: On The Ropes
Title: On the Ropes
Pairing: Rafael Nadal/Roger Federer (RPS)
Rating: NC-17
Word count: 7,200 approx.
This fic contains: Infidelity. Angst.
Author's notes: This fic is set in 2011, in a bit of an AU where Roger retired when the twins were born. Usual awesome beta by [info]tarteaucitron although she didn't see the final version, and any remaining mistakes are all mine, bbs. Thanks also to [info]louiselux for hand-holding and to [info]morebliss on general terms.

Roger smiled, and Rafa felt a pulse of something in his gut. Grow up, Rafa, he told himself. Just grow up. )

1) eeee, so many cookies! Thank you [info]franticsga, [info]geeklite, [info]dogeared, [info]siriaeve, [info]kashmir1, [info]kerrikins, [info]terribilita, [info]shrewreader, [info]summertea, [info]spacedye_vest, [info]outsideth3box, [info]crysothemis, [info]reddwarfer, and anonymous people! deliciousness!

2) I am addicted to [Wordtwist]. I am also TERRIBLE at it. Whatever the visual skill is for seeing words in a boggle square, I don't have it - someday I will be 'above average' *wistful sigh*. That said, I have learned many new words buy randomly typing in contiguous characters - wex, for example, which is related to wax; kuti, which is a contemptible woman (or dog - nice); and kyo, which is a judo move. Words that should be allowed and are not: Moet, Santa, Sora, and Ruus.
A fellow reader at the Olfactory Rescue Service was generous enough to send me samples of a couple of high end aloeswood incenses - Tennendo's Enkuu (fourth from the bottom) and Shunkodo's Aioi no Matsu (bottom of the page). They both employ a sweet/spicy dynamic to rather different ends.

The Enkuu is unusual (to me, at least) on account of the aloeswood in the mix being both distinctly bitter and sweet - usually it seems like one or the other of the qualities predominates, but I get both from this one. It's a nice contrast, the intensity of the bitter resinous notes tempered by a smooth sweetness. This is paired with a prominent cassia/cinnamon note. The overall effect is very dark, sensual and warm; it gives me a distinct color impression of black with gold light slicing through.

The Aioi no Matsu, on the other hand, has kyara in it, and it's a very smooth and sweet aloeswood that gives off a delicate coolness. The spices (getting a lot of clove from this one) enhance the feeling. Like most Shunkodos, this gives off a feeling of restraint and elegance - it's quite subtle (although not so subtle I have difficulties smelling it, like I do with some Shunkodos). This one gives me a tactile sensation of white silk and a cool spring breeze with rain in the air.

Actually, while I like the Enkuu quite a bit, I think I'm falling tragically in love with the Aioi no Matsu. ("Tragically" because, well, it's unaffordable for a peasant like me.) They're expensive, but if you can afford it, you're definitely getting your money's worth. High end aloeswoods really are an experience unlike anything else in the world.

Another fellow reader was generous enough to send me samples of Kunmeido's Goikuin Daiunkoh. (Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see it. Although it's listed under Baieido, that's an error. When it was discovered to actually be a Kunmeido I decided I had to try it, since Kunmeido is probably my favorite incense company overall.)

Well, I think this one's already among my favorite everyday incenses! Despite having the scent of all the signature spices of the brand, it's really a bit of a departure - it's much sweeter than the rest of their US line, sweeter even than Onkun Koh. The more fiery spices are toned down to a background warmth, and a sort of syrupy, maple-like note (probably the fenugreek?) that exists in the background of all of their scents is in the forefront here, over top of a very soft, almost powdery sandalwood. There might be a touch of aloeswood in the mix, too, but I'm not sure.

The overall effect is muted yellow, very warm and cheerful, soothing yet refreshing in a way that keeps it from being sedating. Quite different from the usual solemn blues and greys of the line. I imagine it would be good appetite stimulant, too, because that sweet syrupy note really makes my mouth water.

These are very cost efficient at $8.65 for 50, 14", extra-thick sticks per roll. They really pack a punch, so I don't think most people are going to burn whole stick at a time, so you can probably at least double or triple the stick count.

Many thanks to Steve and Janet for these samples!

Debbie Reese, over at [American Indians in Children's Literature], has made a wonderful series of posts about Twilight, and the real (as opposed to Meyers-imagined) Quileute people of La Push, Washington.

[Her own reaction to New Moon, including links to other articles analyzing Jacob's representation in particular]

[Quileute Elder on Quiluete Stories] - which unpacks how Meyers got the importance of wolves to the community entirely wrong.

5th-Dec-2009 10:27 pm - PostSecret this week

I'm jealous as well.

SIGH. Actually, it was a bit more than that, since I forgot to add a couple of snippets before the deadline, but it wasn't much more than that. (Shame I couldn't count my notes. I had a good 2500 words or so of notes.)

I'm going to try a different tact. I'm going to try requiring myself to write for at least an hour a day this month, not counting the week of Christmas. Automatic writing, fanfic, original, notes, doesn't matter what I write, so long as I'm writing something. (Well, blog posts and the like don't count, but you know what I mean.)

Maybe I'll post a snippet or two of what I wrote over November to my writing journal. If there's anything that isn't completely mangled and/or incomprehensible to anyone who isn't me, that is...

...

SO, ABOUT THAT VASSALORD. You know how we all keep saying, "how does she keep making it pornier while still stopping short of actual porn?" Yeah.

STILL A MYSTERY.

Cut is so nsfw. )

3rd-Dec-2009 06:31 am - Friend of a friend in trouble
A friend of a friend ([info]shuju_the_red) who lives in the Philippines is in trouble - she and her family will be evicted from their home if they don't raise $2500 USD by 11am Friday, Philippines time (10pm Thursday EST). They are halfway there, but that's still a lot of money to raise in not a lot of hours.

A full explanation of the situation and a donation button are here. If you can spare just a couple of dollars, it would help.

Also, Sam Henderson is offering a free, signed copy of her book Heaven's Bones to anyone who donates $10 or more - with free shipping if you're in the US.

eta: [info]alankria is offering postcard stories to anyone who donates $25 or more.
